Portland is a good location due to the distance to the coast, hiking in the Columbia Gorge, and is a short distance (about an hour) away from Mt. Hood. Drive an hour outside of the city and it can be fairly remote. Also if you are into hiking, there are sooooooo many trails to choose from.

Better have financial security. Better have a stable job. Portland used to be (10 plus years ago) a city where you could get a quick barista job and pay for an apartment. Not any more. It is a relatively expensive west coast city. If you don’t have financial security and a solid job, you risk homelessness.Don’t stay in downtown Portland. There’s no benefit. Portland is an extremely small big city. Heads up that you’ll want to book accommodations outside of downtown.
